The vacancy is financed by the Dirk Zwager Assink Foundation and concerns a PhD position within a project called FEMALE - Sex-speciFic mEchanisMs of endothelial transdifferentation, apoptosis and thrombus formation leading to stable Atherosclerotic pLaque Erosion. Within this project, the research will focus on the development of atherosclerotic plaque erosion in women, with emphasis on the role of the microcirculation of the heart (cells of the vascular wall and their interaction with circulating cells). Through sex stratification we will determine the impact of gender differences in this. Moreover, we want to look for women-specific substances or abnormalities in the vessel wall and blood that are specific to the disease process. The research will be mainly carried out at the UMC in Utrecht. You will be primarily working in a team consisting of basic researchers, cardiologists and staff members. In this research project, you will be working on in vitro studies using state-of-the-art techniques to try to unravel the properties and functioning of cells in the (vessel wall of) the microvasculature, of which we know little, unlike the large vessels.
The division of Heart & Lungs (DH&L) is an integral part of the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). The UMC Utrecht is a leading international academic medical centre where knowledge of health, illness and care is generated, evaluated, shared and applied for the benefit of patients and society. One of the focus areas of research within the UMC Utrecht is Circulatory Health; within this focus area, the laboratory of Experimental Cardiology plays a crucial role in the discovery of biomarkers for cardiovascular disease and the testing of new therapeutic approaches to help heart failure patients with the ultimate aim to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and thereby treatment of cardiovascular disease. The laboratory has a strong research line on sex differences in cardiovascular diseases. The team where you will be part of consists of dedicated researchers that specifically aim to improve diagnosis of heart failure in women. We feel passionate about the way we perform research, and aim to translate our findings to clinical practice.
